Traditional Christmas Crib Competition
December 3rd, 2009 · Posted in latest news from Krakow ·A traditional Christmas crib festival took place this morning on the Main Market Square right next to the Adam Mickiewicz monument. But you are going to be surprised, because you won’t see a cradle only with baby Jesus in it and traditional surrounding. The Krakow’s cribs rather look like little toy castle or churches similar to many heritage sites in Krakow full of different details: dolls in folk costumes, animals, Virgin Mary, small Jesus, St. Joseph, local historical figures, Three Kings. The custom of creating such structures goes back to the Middle Ages. Tne first competition was organised 1937 and it’s an important part of the city pre-Christmas activities since then. All the participants are amateurs, but sometimes their works are real masterpieces…
