25 April - Marathon & Regular Walking

April 25th, 2010 · Posted in Jewish Quarter Walk, Old Town Walk, Our Groups, latest news from Krakow ·

Today the city centre was a scene of the 9th International Cracovia Marathon with about 3 500 participants from all over the world.

Music was playing loud…

… water was flowing…

… and runners were obviously running…

Despite jogging and running around we stick to the walking tours :)

Today we had two regular walking tours. In the morning, we had a stroll of Kazimierz and Podgórze with an Australian couple from Victoria, two gentleman from Brighton, England, two Polish-Iranian friends living in Frankfurt in Germany, and three Aussie-South African-Iranian friends from the UK…

Two Iranians were our first guests from this Asian country.

In the afternoon, we had another sunny walk of the Old Town with Aussie-South African-Iranian trio who joined us again straight after the morning walk…

The marathon was won by a runner from Ethiopia… What else could you expect? :)

On the morning of 25th April my brother and I had decided to walk to the Schindler Factory independently. We saw the ad for this walk on the back of our tourist map and thought we’d give it a go. It was excellent; we’d'have missed so much if we hadn’t done it. It gave us a fasinating insight into this dark chapter of the city’s history as well as the Schindler story and the making of the film. At the end of the tour, our guide Phillip, gave us directions (scenic route) to the site of the Plaszow Concentration Camp to the south of the city to end our ‘Schindler’s List’ experience. A few day’s later we visited the Eagle Pharmacy and finally located the commandant’s house at Plaszow. Needless to say, we revisited the film on our return to the UK, and found ourselves watching the background as keenly as the story, knowing we’d been to the places where these events actually took place and those Spielberg used to recreate them.
Thanks Phillip, a great tour and a must for all visitors to Krakow.
